My 5 Favorite Props from The Comisar Collection

Like many of you reading this, I am absolutely blown away by James Comisar’s incredible array of classic TV props that Heritage is offering for sale June 2-4, 2023. The collection includes some of the most iconic items in the history of television, including the Cheers bar, Archie and Edith Bunker’s chairs, the directional signpost from M*A*S*H, and costumes from Star Trek, Batman, The Adventures of Superman, and numerous other shows, to name just a few of the nearly 1,000 items.

My 5 Favorite Props from The Comisar Collection

Entertainment & Music — by Brett Weiss

While flipping through the catalog for the sale, I came up with a list of the five items I’d most like to own. My list isn’t based on value, investment, or anything like that—it strictly refers to the top artifacts I’d like to add to my collection and put on display with no intention of reselling them. I tend to prefer items that are immediately identifiable and don’t take up a ton of space, so that played a big role in my decision-making. I’m also a big fan of fantasy and science fiction, which also informed my choices.

Without further ado, here are five items from the Comisar Collection that would look great in my office or media room, listed in no particular order:

Adam West “Batman” Batmobile Batphone

I was a full-time freelance writer and journalist for more than 20 years before joining Heritage Auctions in 2021. One of the coolest experiences during this time was interviewing Adam West over the phone as I was and am a huge Batman fan and absolutely loved the TV show (1966-1968), despite (or because) of its campy nature. His publicist gave me his phone number, and—I kid you not—Mr. West answered, “Hello, Batcave.” While I can only assume that he answered on a standard telephone, it’s fun to think that he answered via the cool red Batphone we’re offering in this sale.

Barbara Eden “Jeannie” Ornate Glass Bottle from Season 1 of I Dream of Jeannie

Jeannie bottle

Like many kids who grew up during the 1970s, I watched I Dream of Jeannie (1965-1970) reruns over and over again. The concept of having a gorgeous genie on hand who was eager to grant my every wish put my imagination into overdrive—yes, I had a bit of a crush on her. It was a fun and funny show that was a perfect pairing with Bewitched, another favorite of mine. The glass bottle we’re offering was Jeannie’s home, and I’d love to take it home with me—what a terrific and iconic conversation piece!

Cylon Hero Blaster Prop from Battlestar Galactica

cylon blaster

When I was in sixth grade, I distinctly remember drawing spaceships from Battlestar Galactica (1978-79) on notebook paper instead of paying attention to whatever the teacher was talking about. It would never have occurred to me in a million years that I would work at an auction house at some point in the future that would be offering props from the show for sale, including this nifty Cylon Hero Blaster. When the property was reimagined in 2004, it renewed my interest in the original, which is still a lot of fun to watch. I have no interest in real guns, but I could totally use an arsenal of sci-fi weaponry, and this cool prop would be a nice start.

Anissa Jones “Buffy” Mrs. Beasley Ragdoll and Spectacles from Main Cast Member Kathy Garver from Family Affair

Am I a doll collector? No. Would I totally rock the shelves of my office with this Mrs. Beasley ragdoll? You bet! Family Affair (1966-1971) fascinated me when I was growing up because it was so much different than my own life. While Cissy, Jody, and Buffy lived with their uncle and his manservant in a luxury apartment in New York City, my brother, sister, and I lived out in the sticks with our parents in a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas. When the kids wanted to play outside, they went to Central Park—this seemed so exotic to me! And there was the bespectacled Mrs. Beasley, along for many of their adventures.

Star Trek: The Original Series Replica (4) Landing Party Set: Tricorder, Type-1 Phaser, Type-2 Phaser, and Communicator

star trek landing party gadgets

Kids tend to worship idols they see on TV, and I was no different. My “big four” were Dr. J, Ace Frehley, Dr. Johnny Fever, and Mr. Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek. I admired Spock for his logical and rational approach to (almost) every situation he would encounter, and I’ve tried (and often failed) to emulate that in my own life. I loved it when he and the landing party would go down to various planets and analyze their surroundings with their tricorder and have their communicator and phaser ready when needed. The items offered are replicas from the 1990s, but they look incredibly cool and are very high quality. I’m not a cosplayer, but I just might become one if I had this nifty set.
