His pieces are often dark and inspired by graffiti artists and hieroglyphs, calligraphy, and other illuminated manuscripts.
How did RETNA get started?
Born in Los Angeles, RETNA (Marquis Lewis) was inspired by the graffiti of his hometown as well as street artist forebears, Basquiat and Keith Haring. Like so many urban artists of his generation, RETNA looked to push past the limits of graffiti art and is largely responsible for “legitimizing” the urban art aesthetic. His large canvas work has been featured in some of the most prestigious galleries across the world.

Inspired by other street art, Retna creates distinctive yet simple geometric shapes and constructed scripts, often against a dark background.
