How Much is RETNA Art Worth? Street Art Value Guide

Fine Art — Collecting Guide by Heritage Editorial

How Much is RETNA Worth?

The latest news shows RETNA’s net worth to be around 5 million USD, though that number is probably outdated as of 2019. In recent years RETNA’s worth has soared as RETNA art now routinely sell for tens of thousands of dollars. His brand of street-inspired urban art has become en vogue with both collectors and the general public alike.

What is RETNA famous for?

RETNA is largely famous for his commercial pieces. He designed the cover art for Justin Bieber’s 2015 album, Purpose. He’s also collaborated with Nike, Louis Vuitton, and Vista Jet. His pieces are often dark and inspired by graffiti artists and hieroglyphs, calligraphy, and other illuminated manuscripts.

How did RETNA get started?

Born in Los Angeles, RETNA (Marquis Lewis) was inspired by the graffiti of his hometown as well as street artist forebears, Basquiat and Keith Haring. Like so many urban artists of his generation, RETNA looked to push past the limits of graffiti art and is largely responsible for “legitimizing” the urban art aesthetic. His large canvas work has been featured in some of the most prestigious galleries across the world.

What kind of art does RETNA make?

Inspired by other street art, Retna creates distinctive yet simple geometric shapes and constructed scripts, often against a dark background. His images have been printed on cashmere scarfs for Louis Vuitton and used commercially for many different purposes, though he works primarily with acrylic paint on a variety of surfaces.

What is the most expensive RETNA work sold by Heritage Auctions?

The painting, Serenity of the mind States Moments of dark days allows Soaring like a search light -High-, (2012) is RETNA’s most expensive work sold by Heritage Auctions. It sold for  $93,750 on March 18th, 2019. A large acrylic and enamel piece (97” x 103”), it’s a great example of the perfect RETNA work. It’s a complex tapestry of RETNA’s signature constructed script, full of secret meaning, both arresting and alluring the viewer.

How many RETNA works have been sold by Heritage Auctions?

Heritage Auctions has sold 32 different works by RETNA. Some of these include the iconic Conversation Piece (2012) and the aforementioned Serenity of the mind States Moments of dark days allows Soaring like a search light -High-, (2012). Heritage Auctions has a fairly extensive and fruitful relationship with RETNA’s work, and has two more RETNA paintings for sale in 2019.

What is the value of RETNA art?

RETNA’s art can command anywhere from $10,000 – $90,000+ for his large acrylic paintings. Smaller work, like his skate deck series or his scarf for Louis Vuitton, can be had for $500 or more. We’ve also sold inkjet prints on Epson paper for around a thousand dollars. If you’d like to see the full list, check out RETNA artist bio and value guide page on the Heritage Auction site.
