When the PS1, or PSX, as it’s often called, was released worldwide in 1995 (1994 in Japan), it kickstarted a new era in gaming. Like the Atari 2600 and Nintendo Entertainment System before it, the console helped make video gaming a mainstream pop culture pursuit along the lines of movies, sports, music, and television. The system, appealing to an older demographic than previous consoles, was home to tons of great games, many of which are hard to find today, especially factory sealed.
As we’ve been processing this sale, which features games from the original owner’s lofty dream of building a rental store, we’ve been amazed by all the unusual PS1 titles from a variety of genres. Here are five such games collectors are sure to find interesting and highly collectible:
Fox Hunt
Talk about straight outta the ‘90s! This is one of those infamous games that relies heavily on full-motion video and tongue-in-cheek comedy that has aged about as well as month-old bread. However, it features an all-star lineup of talent: Rob Lowe! Timothy Bottoms! George “James Bond” Lazenby! Yes, as with certain other FMV titles, this game actually used famous actors to carry out the largely trial-and-error action. It’s probably not a game you would want to actually play—except to make fun of, perhaps–but holy cow what a great collectible and conversation piece!
Lucky Luke
Bidders in the US may overlook this title, which is set in the American Old West, but it’s based on a comic book series that is very popular in Europe. The comic has spawned movies, a television series, toys, board games, and the like, but the game remains fairly obscure nevertheless, making it a dark horse pick of sorts. This lot, which will likely get bids from comic book collectors as well as video game fans, is remarkably well preserved, scoring a Wata 9.8 with an A++ seal rating. This is about as high of a grade as one can reasonably expect from the company.
Riven: The Sequel to Myst
Back in the day, it seemed like everyone and their grandmother played the original Myst, the point-and-click graphic adventure with all sorts of neat puzzles. It was huge on computers and appeared on consoles as well. Fewer gamers played Riven, which offered the same type of gameplay but upped the ante on atmosphere, difficulty, and storyline. If our previous auctions are any indication, collectors love sequels, especially of iconic games, so we imagine bidder interest in this lot will be strong.
Warpath: Jurassic Park
Most Jurassic Park games are of the action/adventure genre, and we’ve featured a number of those in previous auctions for such consoles as the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. However, this PlayStation game is a one-on-one fighter inspired by such titles as Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. But instead of martial arts combatants, you fight using dinosaurs from the movies Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). There’s even a virtual museum you can visit with info on the dinosaurs!
Xena: Warrior Princess
The great Lucy Lawless was the titular star of the cheeky television series Xena: Warrior Princess, and she looks absolutely terrific—and a little intimidating—on the cover of this game. Not only is this our first time to offer Xena for the PS1, but it’s also the first game based on the show that we’ve ever had the pleasure of putting up for sale. This lot would make for an amazing, highly attractive pop culture item for most any fantasy-loving collector’s media room, office, or game room.
