Arguably one of the most famous horror films of all time, James Whale’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s immortal novel still shocks and delights viewers of all ages to this day. I myself first watched this film with my great aunt, who inspired my love for film, especially the classics. With a marathon of Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, and The Son of Frankenstein, I was transported into a world of Gothic horror where life could be resurrected with science. The film itself is so iconic that Boris Karloff’s portrayal is the immediate image that many conjure up when they think of Frankenstein’s monster, however different he is from the original novel.

While many will no doubt be bidding on the highly coveted one sheet, this German A1 for Frankenstein (featured image) is not to be missed. A gem from the Modern Props collection1, this poster features artwork from Bruno Rehak, one of the leading illustrators for German film posters. Here he depicts Frankenstein at work while his creation looms above him, watching as the doctor brings him to life. The poster was likely inspired by pulp fiction artwork that graced the covers of many paperbacks during the Golden Age of Science Fiction. It is a fitting tribute to what many consider to be the story that invented the science fiction genre.
Understandably, this poster may not make as much of a splash as the hottest poster in the April 2023 sale, but that doesn’t mean that it should fly under the radar entirely. In just as good condition as the one sheet, this German poster boasts of classic 1950s artwork, bringing a 20-year-old film into the then-present day. To the winning bidder, I hope you treasure this poster as much as I would.
