When the Sega Genesis debuted in 1989, I didn’t buy one right away because I was still enjoying my NES and second-gen consoles like the Atari 2600 and ColecoVision. However, when Sonic the Hedgehog hit stores in 1991, its speedy gameplay, colorful graphics, and intriguing protagonist blew me away. I was working at a comic book store at the time, and the buzz about the game among my co-workers was electric. I quickly grabbed a Genesis with Sonic as the pack-in title—it was a no-brainer purchase.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 followed in 1992 with a $10 million marketing campaign, delivering bigger levels, more variety, a two-player mode, and even better visuals. Naturally, I dashed out to buy it and have been a fan of the character and the series ever since.
In 2006, Sega celebrated the 15th anniversary of its iconic blue mascot with the release of Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for the Game Boy Advance. A North American exclusive, it featured a standard port of the original game plus an Anniversary Mode that allowed Sonic to execute the Spin Dash move from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Additionally, it included an unlockable Juke Box for music and sound effects from the game. Sonic on the go with extra features—what’s not to love?
