Daredevil. Punisher. Iron Fist. The Defenders. For every Netflix show that debuts from Marvel Studios, comics fans can trace the characters back to the books they love. From the famous to the obscure, here is a look at the several books picked up by collectors in last Sunday’s Internet Comics Auction that draw a straight line to pop culture’s hottest comic series.
1. The character that started the franchise: Daredevil #1 (Marvel, 1964) CGC GD 2.0 Off-white pages.
Features the origin and first appearance of Daredevil, and the first appearances of Karen Page and Foggy Nelson (both popular characters in the Netflix series). With art by Jack Kirby and a cover by Bill Everett, this comic would be a gem in any Marvel lover’s collection.
2. Coming this August: The Defenders #37 (Marvel, 1976) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages.
With cover art by Gil Kane and inside art Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson art, this issue packs in appearances by Plantman, Nebulon, Porcupine, and Eel.
Daredevil’s triage bestie, a version of the character, portrayed by Rosario Dawson, has appeared in multiple episodes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe web television series, such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. She is a composite of Claire Temple and the comic character Night Nurse. This collection of books also features Patsy & Hedy, with Patsy making an appearance in Netflix’s Jessica Jones.
4. Iron Man makes a cameo in Iron Fist #1 (Marvel, 1975) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
The story is continued from Marvel Premiere #25; cover art by Gil Kane with John Byrne and Al McWilliams art inside.
5. The latest in the Netflix/Marvel franchise: Iron Fist #14 (Marvel, 1977) Condition: VG+.
This issue features the first appearance of foe Sabretooth. Cover art by Al Milgrom cover assisted by John Byrne art inside.
6. Daredevil Illustration Original Art (1994) by Rick Stasi: A nice Daredevil image in the minimalist style of Dave Mazzucchelli.
7. It doesn’t get much better than this: Daredevil #181 (Marvel, 1982) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages.
This explosive issue features the “Death” of Elektra storyline and includes appearances by foes Bullseye and Kingpin and a cameo by friend The Punisher. Double-size issue. Frank Miller story, cover, and art.
