About Chanel Jewelry
Chanel worked in collaboration with jewelry designers, such as Etienne de Beaumont, Francois Hugo, Paul Iribe and Fulco di Verdura. She started with a deliberate mix of fine and costume jewelry and created big, colorful and bold statements, which were very different from minimalistic and geometric Art Deco pieces, worn by the majority of women at that time.
In 1932, in the middle of the economic crisis, Chanel invited the world to her home in Paris to see a stunning collection of 47 pieces of high jewelry that she had created. She explained in the Bijoux de Diamants catalog, “My reason for choosing diamonds is that, dense as they are, they represent the greatest worth in the smallest volume”. Coco Chanel made diamonds a “fashion investment item”. Her Fringe necklaces and sunburst brooches remain as elegant and current today as they were 90 years ago. She celebrated women by covering them with constellations, stars of all shapes and sizes, and comets around their necks.
