Mr. Brainwash entered the art world famously in the 2010 Banksy-produced documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop. In it, we are introduced to the enigmatic French artist. Mr. Brainwash, also known as Thierry Guetta, is a manager of a used clothing store, videographer, and street artist. Many critics find Mr. Brainwash’s style to be similar to that of Banksy, to the point that it’s been hypothesized that they are the same person.

Mr. Brainwash uses stencils, screen printing, and spray paint to make collages that often feature iconic images or people. His frequent subjects include rock legends like Jimi Hendrix or Elvis Presley, to which he adds intense layers of color and graffiti influenced text or imagery. His art history metanarratives have helped him stay more relevant than ever, as he continues to plunge the depths of the postmodern. 

What is the most expensive Mr. Brainwash art sold by Heritage Auctions?

Fetching a price of $32,500, Follow Your Dreams (2012) an acrylic, spray paint, collage is the most expensive work by Mr. Brainwash sold by Heritage Auctions. Featuring a monkey sitting on top of a coca-cola box spray painting the titular phrase, it features bright colors, as well as images from Banksy, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Andy Warhol. It was sold on November 4th, 2019. 

How many Mr. Brainwash works have been sold by Heritage Auctions?

Heritage Auctions has sold 83 different pieces by Mr. Brainwash. Some, including the previously-mentioned, Follow Your Dreams (2012) represent major works by the artist, while others are more playful. One especially fun piece, a vinyl stormtrooper helmet with a Campbell’s condensed soup label layered on top sold for $6,250 on July 22nd, 2019. Many of the pieces sold feature fun riffs on popular culture, making them accessible to even casual collectors (especially those with a sense of humor).
