Shepard Fairey art has been displayed at The Smithsonian, LACMA, MOMA in New York, and the National Portrait Gallery, and has gone a long way to help legitimize the urban art aesthetic.

Shepard Fairey came into the national consciousness for his Hope poster of then-presidential hopeful Barack Obama during the 2008 election. Fairey had already been a fixture in the skateboard and street art scene for decades thanks to his OBEY line of clothing and stickers.  He has designed multiple pieces for album art for the Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, and Flogging Molly.

Born in South Carolina, Shepard Fairey attended the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design, earning a bachelor of fine arts degree in illustration in 1992. By graduation, Fairey had already made a name for himself by designing the infamous Andre the Giant OBEY sticker. From there, he continued to influence and be influenced by the burgeoning skateboard and street art communities. These influences can still be felt in Shepard Fairey’s work today.

Shepard Fairey is best known for his screenprints, stencils, stickers, and poster art. He also dabbles in hand-painted acrylics and other forms of graphic design. These pieces are almost universally influenced by his skater aesthetic and have moved from the subversive into the populist, thanks in large part to the success of the Hope poster.

What is the most expensive Shepard Fairey art sold by Heritage Auctions?

The most expensive Shepard Fairey work sold by Heritage Auctions is the hand-painted acrylic collage, Flag (2010) which sold for $13,750 on April 10th, 2017. Part of a series, it is a reimagining of the American flag, featuring multiple symbols, both political and apolitical in nature, embedded into each star. It’s gritty, saturated, political, and a great example of some of Fairey’s best work. 

How many Shepard Fairey works have been sold by Heritage Auctions?

Heritage Auctions has sold 145 works by Shepard Fairey, with another 25 to be sold by the end of 2019. We’ve sold everything from a few of his Flag series in 2010 to his iconic We the People series of 2017. Many of his older OBEY works are also represented in our extensive catalog.
